Community guidelines

Comments here are a place to read and discuss the work. They're published at once; the editors read them and hide what breaks these guidelines.

Placeholder text — This page is placeholder text for review; the platform's team writes the final text before launch.

The spirit of it

We judge the work, never the person. Disagree with the piece and with other readers as much as you like — argue with the idea, not with whoever holds it.

What's welcome

Critical reading, useful information, what your own experience adds, honest questions and courteous disagreement — in Arabic, English, French or Spanish.

What we hide

Insults, contempt and incitement; any sectarian, racist or sexist speech; threats and anyone's personal details; ads and repeated messages; anything unlawful. We never edit a comment: it stays as written, or it is hidden whole.

How we moderate

A comment is published the moment it's sent, and the editors see every one. What breaks these guidelines is hidden and stays visible to its author alone. Someone who keeps breaking them may have their comments paused for a while or for good, and is told so. We may close comments on an article; earlier comments stay readable. Our decisions never rest on anyone's political views.

Your name

Comment under your name or a pseudonym, but don't pass yourself off as someone else, or as Zawiya Tahawwul or its team. You need an account to comment, and your email is shown to no one.

If you think we got it wrong

If your comment was hidden or your comments were paused and you think it's a mistake, write to us from the contact page and name the article and the comment. You can always delete your comments, or your whole account, from your account page.
